Steelers Defense “Gobbles Up” Bengals Passing Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers would face division rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals, in what has been billed the Turkey Bowl by many of their peirs. The game between the founders of the BDML and leaders of a brave new league.
It would be a game that both teams needed to win as the Baltimore Ratbirds are running away with the division and a win would get one of these teams closer to catching up. It would also be for pride, for the love of the game and for everything in between.
The game of the season, Turkey Bowl IV, would turn out to be more of a dark comedy for these two offenses though as they would combine for 12 turnovers. Seven interceptions would be gobbled up by Pittsburgh Defense as their offense would toss three of their own and fumble not once but twice inside the Bengals 10 yard line. The first fumble coming on their opening drive when Jonathan Stewart would caugh up the ball as he crossed the 5 yard marker.
The Bengals would turn that fumble into a touchdown but it was mostly down hill for them from their as the Steelers defense, led by Troy Polamalu, who had three interceptions on the day, would take over for most of the rest of the game and it would be the fourth quarter before either of these two teams could score again as they spent time play hot potatoe the rest of the half and deep into the third period.
The Steelers, who have revamped their running game by trading for J. Stewart and rebuilt their secondary by adding corner back Kelvin Hayden and FS, A. Bethea, via trade as well got several contributions from their new stars but not all was positive as Stewart would pound two fumbles into the turf while Bethea would pick up a contraversial pass interference that lead to the Bengals substaining a rare drive without an interception being thrown and getting their second score of the game. Hayden was the one who earned his paycheck on the day though as he picked of his first and second pass as a Steelers in his first game with the team, one inwhich he turned into a pick six.
“The game was ugly, every time we got a drive going they forced us to turn it over, then they would get a drive going and our defense would take it back. Crazy game man, not sure how we escaped it with the win to be honest.” said Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin, after the game.
Heath Miller would get the Steelers second touch down on the day by getting behind a blitzing defense for a 55 yard catch and run to give his team the lead.
“I say the blitz and looked at Ben and he knew exactly where I was going, I just ran up the field and he hit me over the top and I was lucky enough to run it in the rest of the way.” said Miller of his touch down catch.
The Bengals would tie the game at 14 all with :57 seconds left in the contest as it looked like this one would be going into over time. That was before Ben Roethlisberger was able to find second year WR Mike Wallace streaking down the field on a 48 yard catch that put the Steelers in perfect position for a game winning FG. With no time outs left and only :26 seconds left on the clock, kicker Jeff Reed was called apon to get the game winning boot and did just that as the Steelers would finish their 17 point 4th quarter with a game winning FG by their trusty kicker.
The Steelers have now got themselves back into the division race with a pair of wins over the Patriots and Bengals but the season does not get any easier as the undefeated Atlanta Falcons are up next. It won’t be an easy game to win, but if the defense can gobble their way to another victory, this team may have just found the final peices to the puzzle and become a real threat in the AFC.
Steelers “Sack” Patriots

Pittsburgh Blitz (AP)

The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots both entered this game at 1-3 and were on a collision course to save their seasons. It would be billed as the Patriots high powered offense verse the Steelers hard hitting defense. The game would start slow as both teams struggled to score early but a defensive explosion in the fourth quarter by the Steelers would be the difference in this one.
The teams would trade a pair of FG’s and both score a touchdown during the first half to take a 13 all tie into the locker room. WR Randy Moss scored on a 22 yard TD catch while newly aquired HB Jonathan Stewart got his first touchdown as a Steeler on a 2 yard run.
The second half would see all the fireworks though as the Steelers rookie HB, Larry Mata, would set them off by turning a 50 yard scamper into 6 points on the opening drive of the third quarter for his team. The Patriots would add a FG during the same period but the grand finally would start mid-way through the fourth period as the Steelers special teams and defense, who harrased Tom Brady all day with 3 sacks and several more pressures and 3 interceptions on the day, would begin to take over the game.
The Patriots opened the scoring in the fourth period after WR M. Colston grabbed a nice pass for a 13 yard touchdown but that is when things began to unravel for the Patriots. The ensuing KR would be returned for a 96 yard score by Stefan Logan and All Pro safety Troy Polamalu would turn a great one handed interception 35 yards for a touch down in a span of :13 seconds. On the next patriot drive Brady would throw his 3rd interception of the game as rookie CB James Fluellen would grab his 4th pick of the season and return it to the 6 yardline for his team. Jonathan Stewart would get his second TD on the day shortly after that as the Steelers ended their 21 point late game flurry and the patriots chance for a win.
“It was a great game, the patriots gave us everything we could handle, that pass game is very good but we made the right adjustments at the half and it payed off late in the game. We had several big plays today but the unsung hero is rookie DE, Jackson Hailes who in his first start, was in the Patriots backfield all day. The pressure he created lead to the turnovers and gave the defense the spark we needed. I am proud of how the men played today, they never gave up and faught back everytime they fell behind.” said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin after the game.
The Steelers would go on to win 41-30 and get the monkey of three consecutive, close losses off their back after opening the season with a win over the Broncos. Up next are division rivals the Cincinatti Bengals and the Steelers will need another great outing by their defense verse one of the leagues most high powered offense’s, if they are to keep pace in the division and turn their season around.
Steelers welcome J. Stew to the ‘Burgh!!

It was 4 weeks ago and one play into the season that the Pittsburgh Steelers would lose starting HB Rashard Mendenhall for 12 weeks to a back injury. This after watching free agent Willie Parker bolt for the Ravens.
Pittsburgh would be down to a rookie and an aging back-up to lead the ground game. Though Larry Mata has done a fine job in his first NFL season thus far, the Steelers felt he needed more help then un-drafted free agent HB, DJ. Claytor, and Mewelde Moore, in the backfield.
After several weeks of trade talks with the Carolina Panthers, help is on the way as Pittsburgh finally got their man. A running back that they felt got away from them a few years ago in the draft. That player is none other then All Pro, Jonathan Stewart.
“We felt we needed to give Larry some help, he has played great for a rookie, but we are a two back offense and knew the minute Mendy went down we would have to find a player of his caliber to fit the bill and we think we did that by aquiring J Stew.” said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
The Steelers would have to part with another rookie, first round pick, TE Adam Saint and a 2nd round pick in next years draft to aquire Stewart but with Heath Miller on the roster having Saint was a luxary they could afford to lose. In return Pittsburgh would aslo recieve TE Jeff King who will take over the role of second string TE right away.
“I loved playing in Carolina and the team has been good to me, but the chance to be a Pittsburgh Steeler and run for a team with their tradition is awsome. When coach asked me how I felt about the trade, I said when does the plane leave? I can’t wait to lace them up and put on the Black & Gold and help my new family get their season back on track.” said Stewart when asked about the trade.
The Steelers can use all the help they can get these days too as they have started the season a miserable 1-3 and have a long way to go to catch the streaking Ravens and Bengals in the division. The year is young though and the team has not lost hope on the season yet.
Rumor has it that the Steelers are still interested in adding to the team and this may not be their final trade before the deadline. Coach Tomlin was quoted as saying ’We are always open to adding talent and are in the mix to get more depth for our secondary, specifically at free safety.”
What that could mean is any fans guess, but stay tuned for another announcement soon, if the Steelers are able to find a player they covet and the price is right.
Big Ben’s late game heroics lead to a victory.

Pittsburgh Post Gazette,
It was opening day in the BDML and the Pittsburgh Steelers would have to travel to Mile High to face the revamped Denver Broncos, in a week 1 showdown between two very good defenses. From the opening kick off the air was filled with tension as both teams were ready to let the hitting begin.
The Broncos would get the ball first but did very little with it as they were held to three and out by a very stout Steelers defensive. A pair of runs and a mis-que on an errant pass on third down would force them to punt.
After a short punt return the Steelers would take over possesion of the ball and then it happened. The very first play of the game would be a run by Rashard Mendenhall. He would gain no yards and his season would quickly come to an end all in the matter of seconds. When the whistle blew, Mendenhall remaind down and forced the trainers to come out. After a few minutes of evaluation the cart was brought on the field and he was hauled away.
X-rays in the locker room confirmed the worst and it was to be known that Mendy had suffered a herniated disc in his back and the prognosis is he will be out at least 12 weeks, maybe longer. The news was not good but the game had to continue. With Mendenhall out the Steelers would insert rookie Larry Mata and continue on. The drive would stall and the Steelers were forced to punt.
On the next series the Broncos would get things moving as their short, quick hitting passing game would start to thrive and they moved the ball inside the Steelers 5 yardline. Not to be under sold, the Steelers defense stood their ground and forced a goal line stand that had the Broncos settling for a FG and the games first points.
Pittsburgh would get the ball back and be forced to regroup with their leader at HB out of the game and an untested rookie getting his first BDML carries. Mata would not disapoint either as he turned a 75 yard drive into 6 points as his six yard scamper for a TD, his first as a pro, would put his team out front 7-3.
Another great drive by Denver would be foiled by yet another goal line stand by a very Stout Steelers defense and Denver would be forced to settle for their second FG on the day, making the score 7-6.
“We had trouble stopping their short passing game, the routes were percis and quick to develope. They did a great job, but when it counted most, we banned together and held them to the FG’s” said James Harrison of the Steelers after the game.
The Steelers next drive would end on a Ben Roethlisberger interception that set up the Broncos with great field position and Denver would take advantage of the turnover and turn it into 7 points on a 10 yard Matt Schaub to Tony Sheffler hook up, for the 6 points and just like that Denver was up 13-7.
Pittsburgh was not done yet though as they got the ball back with just over a minute left in the half and drove it into FG range to make it 13-10 at the break as Jeff reed would hit a 41 yard boot with 8 seconds left in the quarter.
The second half opened with the Steelers getting the ball first and after picking up a few first downs Denvers defense would break on a slant pass and grab their second INT of the game from Ben. Again they drove inside the Steelers 5 yardline but agian they were held to the FG and it was now 16-10 as Denver had begun to gain momentum in the game.
The teams would trade punts to finish up the third quarter and the score would remain 16-10 as neither team could get anything going and both defense’s began to take over the game.
“It was not looking good, I made two bad passes, Mendy was out and we had a rookie with that deer in head lights look leading our run game. Not to mention that defense was looking great. The next drive though I told the guys to just get open and I would get them the rock and another rookie would take what I said and run with it.” said Roethlisberger.
The next drive the Steelers passing game would take the lead as Roethlisberger drove his team down the field in 6 plays before hitting, rookie TE and first round pick, Adam Saint, for a 14 yard score that put his team ahead 17-16. It was a beautiful pass and nice run by the young TE to cap off a great drive.
Denver would not stay down long though as their short, quick hitting passing game got going again and they drove right back down the field. But once again the Steelers defense bent but did not break as yet another goaline stand held Denver to just 3 points to make it 19-17 as time was running down.
Pittsburgh would get the bal back with 1:08 left in the game and no time outs. It did not look good for the Black and Gold but the team held together and Big Ben went into hero mode as he has been to known to do several times in his career. Roethlisberger would run a two minute drill and hit 4-6 of passes for 65 yards as he drove his team to the Broncos 15 yardline with about 30 seconds left in the game. The Steelers wasted very little time running the fieldgoal unit on the field, lined up the ball and watched as Jeff Reed hit the chip shot over the gaol post for the win.
“It was a great game, my hat goes off to the Broncos. They have a solid offense and even better defense. I am just proud of the way our men held together though. The defense bent but did not break today and the offense and two rookies bailed us out. Both Larry Mata and Adam Saint showed us again why we drafted them. They both have brite futures and I look forward to seeing how they turn out.”
Up next for the Steelers is the Baltimore Ratbirds and the mighty purple penis eating defense. So they won’t have long to bask in this victory as one of their biggest rival gets ready to come to town.
Note: The Steelers say they are now in the market for a HB and rumor has it they have contacted the Panthers about James Stewart and Colts to inquiry the cost of Josaph Addai.
Pittsburgh Steelers Off-Season in a Nut Shell

Pittsburgh Post Gazette,
The dawn of a new season is apon us and a new chapter is about to unfold in the hostory of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though before we can turn the page, one must first be introduced to a new cast of characters. With the off-season behind us, it is now time to meet our new heros in black and gold.
The draft was the start of replensihing the roster but not the only place in which new players bloomed. Though we will start by introducing our fans to the rookies first. Those who came at a premium and who are all now under contract and ready to begin their football lifes anew.
Adam Saint: One position the Steelers did not count on drafting was tightend, but with the 30th selection, Saint was the best player on the board at that point and Pittsburgh called his name with their first pick of the day. Saint was the best TE in the draft and being paired with Heath Miller the Steelers could have the best TE tandom in the league.
James Fluellen: The Steelers came into this draft with a need for a cornerback. WIth none left on the board that they valued high enough to draft in the first round, the Steelers would trade for the 6th pick in round two and grabe Fluellen. He is fast and has a nack for the ball and could give the playmaking CB they have lacked the last few years. (note: The Steelers traded DT Casey hampton to aquire this pick and th same in the 3rd round from the Falcons.)
Jye Martin: With the 30th pick in second round, the Steelers would grab another potential starter in the secondary, by selecting a Free Safety with the size and speed to compliment all pro Troy Polamalu. Martin should compete with both Ryan Clark and Will Allen for the chance to start and could very easily win the job if he can show his playmaking ability on the next level.
Jackson Hailes: With their first of a pair of third rounders the Steelers would add even more youth to their defensiveline by selecting Hailes who was a great pass rusher in college but could be too small to be a full time 3-4 end in the NFL. Hailes will enitially be used on passing downs as a situational rusher but can grow into more reps if he can add some weight to his frame over the season.
Larry Mata: With the departure of Willie Parker via free agency the Steelers were in need of a halfback to play behind Rashard Mendenhall and the team was pleasantly suprised when Mata was left on the board when they picked in the fourth round. Mata should see playing time right away and add 4-5 carries a game, possibly more if he can pick up the offense quick enough. His speed will be a nice complement to Mendy’s power and grit.
The Steelers would add a DT, OLB and WR with their remaining picks but none are expected to make the team. All could see a spot on the practice squad but the chance of cracking the 53 man roster is slime for all of them.
The Steelers would also add a group of players to the mix via free agency. Some could say a flurry of players as they signed several more then any of their fans every expected.
During the first week of free agency the Steelers added safety Will Allen, wide recievers Antwan Randle El & Arnez Battle and much needed depth on the offensiveline with the addition of Johnathan Scott at left tackle. They were not done there though as they would sign another trio after the draft. Late additions to the team include, right gaurd Randy Thomas who is expected to be a starter, fullback Terrell SMith who will split time with Frank Summers and defensive tackle Justin Harrell is is expected to replace the departed Casey Hampton.
With everything said and done the Steelers have added 11 new faces to the team some who will compete for starting positions and many who will either play vital back up roles or be much needed help on the special teams.
The time has come though, for the new to mix with the old as the season is apon us and the Steelers are getting ready to open against the Denver Broncos, who found a new starting QB via trade, in Matt Shaub. The only question left to answer though is, can they find that team chemistry that is needed to compete in the NFL or will all the new faces be like strangers in the night?

Coach Speak – Raiders Edition

Good afternoon coach Pac and thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions.
Q. You recently were hired to bring the lowly Raiders back to the land of the NFL. What was that first call like with Mr. Davis, when you found out you got the job?
A. He asked me how fast my 40 times was… ha! No really, Al basically told me he wanted to bring someone in capable of turning the team into a winner and he felt I was the best choice for that. He even chose to concede GM duties to me as well, which is a true show of faith. For those of you who know Al and how he’s run this team in the past you know… him giving up GM control really is a big shocker. That’s when I knew he was committed to me. And that’s also when I knew I’d be a fit in Oakland.
Q. Now that you have been through the draft and had a chance to get to know the guys on the team, what do you think the Raiders biggest weakness/strength will be this season?
A. Well, our strength lies in two areas. We have a great offense now with this deep corps of pass catchers and our thunder and lightning duo in the backfield. Couple all that with the outstanding addition of Jack English, and you’ve got yourself a fun offense to watch. Put that offense together with the veterans we have on our defense and look out. Our fans are gonna be in for some fun this year.
As far as a weakness goes, we have a lot of youth on this team. To some, that could be considered a huge weakness. I don’t see it though. I feel like we’ll be fine. There’s a lot of veteran leadership on defense that will spill over the whole team and really give the youngsters an example of what it means to be an NFL player. There’s guys like Nnamdi, Richard, Thomas and Kirk to look up to. How can you go wrong with leadership like that? And make sure you don’t look past Jack, either. We brought him in here for a reason!
Q. The BDML Draft has passed and you have already made some roster changes outside of the draft, what do you feel is the biggest thing you have done to improve the team so far and do you have any other moves in mind before the season starts?
A. I feel like we managed to address most of our glaring issues through the draft. Our largest addition was probably us having a chance to grab a true franchise quarterback in Jack English. He instantly changes our offense into a true threat. I’d go into Jack more, but there will be a press conference in the near future for that. We also managed to have an amazing pickup in Patrick Lopez in the 2nd round. It’s beyond me how this guy fell. There are some worries that his combine numbers were blown out of proportion.. and let me tell you, they weren’t. This kid is just as much of a beast as he showed at the combine. Workout warrior he may be, but that translates to an NFL field pretty darned well in my opinion.
As far as other moves go… well, we are always evaluating our roster and looking for ways to improve. Don’t be surprised if we make another big splash or two in either free agency or through a trade. Don’t be surprised if we decide to stay put, either. I’m pretty happy where we stand at the moment.
Q. The AFC West has a couple great teams, who do you see as the team to beat?
A. I’m not going to sit here and be a primadonna and talk about how we’re going to be the team to beat like some teams do. I try to let my teams play do the talking. As far as our division goes, there’s 3 other great teams in it and it’s going to be a definite fight for all 4 of us. Not one team in this div is going to go down easily. It should be a great year for AFC West football.
Q. You open the season verse the Texans and kind words for them before the game?
A. Again, I’ll let my teams play do the talking. Let’s just say, though, that by the end of this game our play will have talked enough to be written down into a novel. Let’s hope it’s a good one.. haha!
Huge League Announcement
March 10, 2010 by admin
Filed under BDML Under The Hood
With that said the BDML has been very inactive as well these days. Right now, we are 3 days in and have 10 unplayed games and almost as many that are not scheduled.
With that said, two days ago the League Committee held a meeting to decide the future of the league and what we need to do to build activity back up. We kicked around several ideas but the one that kept kicking back was what this post is about.
Effective immediately the BDML, as we know it, is closing our doors. Due to several bad trades, league inactivity and other considerations, such as the learning curve of transfering over from PC to a console league. The BDML is closing.
Do not fret my pets. This is for a good cause and the chance to be reborn, to grow stronger and we are re-opening as quickly as we close. So what does this all mean?
This means the BDML has been reinvented. We have restructured the front office with new Co-Commish’s in the mix to help run the day-to-day operations, new rules and most of all a new direction & dedication to being great. Check the League Staff page for information on who is now in charge.
We have also edited the league rules, most notably the trade rules, to help keep the teams in tack and more realistic. I suggest every GM read the League Rules for the updates.
With the rebirth comes a restart as well. The plan is to set all teams back to true NFL rosters, with this they will also be as up-to-date as possible. Example, J. Peppers will be a Bear.
The restart won’t be popular with everyone we know, but it is in the best interest of the league as we plan to run through the entire summer and to be able to attrack fresh blood, we felt we needed to restructure, restart and change the trade and other rules to be more effective and grow into a stronger league as a whole.
The good news, we have simmed season 1 and will open with a NFL draft.
The plan moving forward is as follows:
1. All teams will need to sign up for the new franchise, this will need to be done by Friday night. Any team not claimed by then will be considered open to new GM’s that we will be recruiting over the next few days.
(Take the team you currently are when signing up, unless you have agreed to a trade with another GM and have commish permission as well.)
League Name: The BDML – League Password: 21
2. Once signed up for the franchise all teams will be required to post four franchised players. See this forum for more info. No trades can happen until you have done this.
3. Once signed up for the franchise and franchised players are posted teams can begin to post trade blocks and post trades. Be sure to read these new Trade Rules before doing so. (Also read below for info on who can’t be traded.)
4. We will hold the BDML draft on Saturday night at 9pm est. (Time is subject to change). Any team that does not show for this draft will have the CPU control the draft for them. If you trade a draft pick and don’t show your trade will be voided.
Notes:
We will finish updating free agents after the draft, as of now the franchise will not allow us to continue until the draft is over.
The league staff plans to update the rosters as much as possible up to an hour before we draft. What that means is, any FA that signs with an NFL team between now and Saturday night at 8pm est or already has signed with a team, will be updated on the BDML rosters as well.
With that said NO RFA or UFA, on any BDML team, may be traded. If there is a chance that guy could switch NFL teams he can not be traded until after the final rosters are set Saturday night. This means do your homework before working out trades or they will be voided, rejected by the league.
Finally, any questions ask. Also if you do not plan to continue with the league due to the restart/restructure please let a commish know, so we do not waste time holding your team until Fridays sign up deadline. We will be recruiting new GM’s this week to fill up the league so please do not waste our time.
Also, all inactivity moving forward, will not be taken lightly, miss a game without posting in vacation forums or a good reason, slack on posting scheduling in the forums, or whatever and you will be subject to being replaced sooner then later.
Thanks guys and get r done………
Under The Hood – Week 7 Edition

Filed under BDML Under The Hood
Welcome to this edition of “Under The Hood” where we cover everything league related, from trades to rumors and everything in between. This week we will discuss the first 6 games of the season, transactions, rumors and everything in between.
The first 6 weeks:
The first six weeks of the BDML season have been anything but boring. Several teams that flopped last year are flying high this season and a few of the better teams have fallen on hard times, but that’s the BDML where anyone can win, on any given Sunday.
The Steelers, who finished last in the AFC North just one year ago with a 4-12 record are now the leaders of the division at 5-1. A solid draft and some great off season moves have payed off thus far on the season for them, but their is still too many games left to know exactly where things will lead for Pittsburgh. Another bottom feeder from a year ago, the Buccaneers, are playing competitive football after an off season overhall as are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Currently on a downslide after great seasons just one year ago are the Minny Viks, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers and the defending champion, Houston Texans. New management could be the blamn for a few of these under achievers but the others are just not getting it done or the same breaks they got last year. The biggest suprise would be the Chargers who made so many changes this past off season that the team just does not seem to have any chemistry and all the new players just can’t seem to get on the same page.
Season Trades:
Welcome to St. Louis, yes Mr. Edwards the nightmare continues as the Cleveland browns made a surprise move that sent all pro WR, Braylon Edwards to the Rams for RT, Jason Smith. Both teams tossed in a few fillers to even up the trade but in the end, Edwards got his wish to be traded from the lowly Browns, the problem is the grass may not be any greener on the other side.
In other trade news A. Bolden will no longer be fighting for balls with Larry Fitzgerald or catching them from Kurt Warner, now he will fight Randy Moss and Wes Welker for them as the Cardinals granted his wish sending him to New England for Vince Wolfork. The Ravens lost all hope in Joe Flacco and sent him to purgatory for another down trodden QB, Jamarcus Russell, as the Raiders and ratbirds would swap signal callers.
The Steelers would acquire Chaz Schilens from the Raiders for Willie Parker and Schilens has not been a disappointment as he is Pittsburghs leading receiver. Ray Lewis is now a Titan as Keith Bullocks moved to Baltimore. Larry Johnson moved to San Diego, while L. Tomlinson is now a Chief.
Finally the BDML has had it’s first ménage à trois as the Titans, Vikings and G-nats got down and dirty on a three way trade that included, ah screw it, read the forums and try to figure it out.
BDML Rumor Mill:
On the rumor mill front, word is that the Cinncy Bungals head coach is gay and has been MIA these days while pursuing his dream of legalization of gay marriage. other rumors have both the Steelers and Colts looking to trade first round picks to acquire much needed help. The Steelers are after bodies on the offensive-line while the Colts are looking for a WR or shut down CB.
Surprise Teams:
The Steelers have to be one of the biggest surprise teams of the season as they have turned it around from 4-12 last season to 5-1 during this campaign. On the other side of the win, loss column the Chargers have to be the leagues biggest disappointment as they have fallen on hard times and are sitting at 2-3. The defending champion, Houston Texans, would have the honor of biggest downfall if not for the fact they are currently under new management and you can’t compare this team to last years for that same reason.
Well thats all folks. Until next time thanks for reading “Under the Hood” and if your team would like to leak a rumor or two for the next edition be sure to PM steelerguy26 with the information in the forums.
Coach Speak – Chiefs Edition

This week the staff of Coach Speak took some time out of their busy schedule to ask the Kansas City Chiefs coach, Jukster818, some questions about his teams early season good fortunes.
Q. When taking over the Chiefs what did you feel needed to be done to make the team a winner and do you feel you have accomplished that yet?
A. Well we definitely didn’t have as much talent as the other teams in our division, specifically at wide receiver and also the defensive line. So we drafted a couple receivers in Clayton Roberson and Robert Toliver, both of them have played great for us so far. On the defensive line we added the best pass rusher in the league in Dwight Freeney, he has also played very well. As far as making the team a winner, I don’t think we have accomplished that yet. There have been some teams that start the season 6-0 or 7-0 and still don’t make the playoffs so we still got a lot of work to do.
Q. Your team is currently 4-1, what do you feel was the biggest off season change that you made to help turn the team around?
A. Well I believe the progression of quarterback Matt Cassel and drafting Clayton and Robert at receiver has played the biggest role in us winning games so far.
Q. AT this point of the season who would be your teams MVP thus far and what has he done to earn that honor?
A. The team MVP definitely has to be QB Matt Cassel, as of right now he’s leading the league in passing yards and has 13 touchdown passes versus only 5 interceptions. But he couldn’t be that successful without the offensive line protecting him the way they have. So I also give a lot of credit to the O-line, they give him a lot of time in the pocket.
Q. Who do you see as the team to beat in the AFC West and AFC in general?
A. In the AFC West I’m going to have to say us, we have already beat the Raiders and the Broncos so if we keep it up I think we will come out on top of the division. The team to beat in all of the AFC has to be the Titans, those guys are ridiculous. I believe they have the best defense and the best offense in the league, so their obviously the Super Bowl favorites as of right now.
Q. Where do you see your team when the play offs start?
A. Well I don’t want to look to far ahead, but I think we have a great chance of having a 1st round bye in the playoffs this season.
Thanks a ton Coach and good lukc the rest of the season.
