The New York Jets improve to 3-0 with their win over the Detroit Lions. After starting the game allowing an opening drive TD, going 3 and out, and then allowing another TD, the Jets defense clamped down totaling two interceptions and seven sacks. The Jets were led by second year QB Mark Sanchez who finished 12-25 with 224 yards and 3TD’s, including a PA boot and a strike in the back of the endzone to Jerricho Cotchery with 2:37 remaining in the game to take the lead 24-21, which was the final score.

On the Jets final drive on 3rd and 3, Sanchez completed a 7 yard completion to David Clowney to seal the game, but took a big hit and left the game with a torn abdominal. He will be out for 2 weeks. Also injured, is star WR Terrell Owens, who had 2 receptions in the first half for 77 yards, his highest total of the season. TO took a high big hit on a 34 yard completion down the right side of the field and broke his jaw, he will be out for 4 weeks.

The Jets go on the road without Sanchez and TO to face the Jaguars next week, but have a much needed by in week 5. Sanchez will return for the week 6 game, and TO is set to return in week 7 or 8.

Jets acquire Terrell Owens

38 year old Terrell Owens has been traded to the New York Jets along with the Chargers 23rd overall pick (SS Ameroil Jones)in exchange for the number 8 overall pick, Wide Receiver Jamarion Bellows.

Veteran Wide Receiver Terrell Owens, who is known as quite the distraction, has cooled down since his stint in Buffalo and San Diego. He is looking to win, and coming to the Jets is just what he expects to do. The Jets hold one of the best defenses and run games in the NFL, and with the addition of veteran Terrell Owens, and the maturing of second year Quarter Back Mark Sanchez, the Jets look to become a more versatile Offense. Terrell Owens is quoted as saying “I’m also happy I don’t have to end up on Revis island for 2 games again this season, and I am like fine wine, I continue to get better with age, and practicing against the best cornerback in the league everyday will help me do that.”

There are high hope for the New York Jets this season, and new General Manager CBat28 is quoted as saying “we have assembled a team that has what it takes to be very competitive.” CBat28 took over the Falcons at 5-5 and went on to win the remaining 6 regular season games, before getting run over by Brandon Jacobs and the NY Giants in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Week 1 Preview- Jets visit Texans

Location:
Reliant Stadium-Houston, Texas

The Jets:
Led by a rookie coach and rookie quarterback, the Jets still have one of the most improved and impressive defenses in the league. Ryan and the Jets brought over Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard, and Lito Sheppard to add to David Harris, Kerry Rhodes, Darelle Revis, and Kris Jenkins. Plus, Rex Ryan has had one of the top defensive schemes in all of football. Look for them to try to get to Schaub often. Offensively, the Jets ranked in the top 10 in rushing last year, with the duo of Thomas Jones and Leon Washington and they will be back, ready to lead the team behind one of the top offensive lines in the league. But Mark Sanchez is only a rookie and he does not have what many people would call a great recieving core, so there is a question mark there.

The Texans:
Looking for the first winning season in team history, the Texans will try to run over the Jets with their high powered offense, ranked 3rd last year. They are led by Matt Schaub, one of the hardest qbs to sack, Steve Slaton, an emerging young running back, and Andre Johnson, one of the best young receivers in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, the Texans are led by Mario Williams at defensive end, but have little more help after that. They were ranked in the bottom 10 in defense last year, a contribution to their continuous losing seasons.

Key Match-ups:
Texans O vs Jets D- One of the top offenses and one of the top defenses collide, and whichever one outperforms the other can help decide the game.
Darelle Revis vs Andre Johnson- One of the top young corners has to defend one of the top young wide receivers. If Revis can shut down Johnson, Matt Schaub’s day becomes a lot harder, but if he doesn’t, the Jets will have to focus more on him and less on Slaton, a big threat.
D’Brickshaw Ferguson vs Mario Williams- Williams will be looking to get to Sanchez often to throw him off, and Ferguson will have a tough time stopping him. Ferguson cannot allow Sanchez, a rookie, to be constantly hit.

And the QB is…

…Mark Sanchez.  Head coach Rex Ryan has seen enough of his rookie quarterback to know that he is the one he wants to lead the team forward for years to come.  “As a rookie, he has shown great poise and leadership, and has done and said all the right things.  But I still tip my hat to Kellen Clemens, who also showed us some promise, but I feel Mark is the way we should go,” said Ryan.

Sanchez was in awe when he heard the news.  “To get an opportunity to start as a rookie qb in this league is not something many people  get a chance to do,” said Sanchez, “I thank coach Ryan for this opportunity and will try my best to lead this team going forward.”

Clemens was not completely suprised by the decision.  “I had a great opportunity to win the job this year, but I could’nt make the most of my opportunities.  When Mark struggled, I struggled too, instead of capitalising on his mistakes.  I just couldn’t get the job done, so Rex went with the man who he thought would help us win.”  But Kellen also said he would help Sanchez as he knows the system and has been in the league for a while.

Sanchez will make his first start on the road in Houston on Sunday afternoon.
